Getting started
Getting VoxUno running takes one sitting. You sign up, tell VoxUno your website, and work through Setup's four steps. By the end, your Monitors are watching the Communities you chose, and you land on your Dashboard.
Sign up
Sign up with your email address and a password.
We then email you a link to verify your address. You can't use VoxUno until you've opened it: if you sign in before then, we send you a new link. Opening the link in the browser you signed up in signs you in and opens New Project.
If you signed up from an invitation to someone else's Project, opening the link puts you in that Project instead, and Setup isn't yours to do. Members and roles explains invitations.
Create your Project
A Project is one business you monitor for, usually your own. In New Project, enter your website. You can also give the Project a name; if you don't, it's named after your website's domain.
Your first Project starts a 14-day free trial, with no credit card. During the trial, your Project has the Business Plan's Monitor limit, 50 Monitors, and unlimited Communities.
Any Project you create after that needs a Plan before its Setup opens. Every Project has its own Plan: see Plans and billing.
Setup
Setup has four steps. Until you finish it, it's your Project's only page.
1. Analyse the website
VoxUno reads your homepage and a few of the pages it links to, and drafts your Business Profile from them.
2. Check the Business Profile
The Business Profile describes your business in six fields:
- a description;
- your products and services;
- your target customers;
- your competitors;
- the problems you solve;
- the industry terms your buyers use.
Edit any of them. VoxUno suggests Communities and Match terms from your Business Profile, so make sure it describes your business and your buyers well. The Suggestions are made when you first save it, and again whenever you change it during Setup. Later, you can edit it on the Company tab in Configuration.
3. Choose communities
A Community is a whole site, such as Reddit, Hacker News or one forum: never part of one, like a single subreddit.
VoxUno first looks for the Communities where your buyers talk, and this step shows nothing else until it's done. Then it offers you:
- Suggestions: Communities VoxUno suggests from your Business Profile, best fit first, each with a one-line reason;
- Featured Communities, which we offer to every Project;
- a box where you paste any site's address to add it.
Any Community you already follow comes first.
Tick a Community to follow it, and untick it to stop. Each tick takes effect at once: there's no separate Follow button.
When the Suggestions arrive, VoxUno ticks every Community it suggests, including any still waiting for our review: their Results start once we approve them. It doesn't tick the Featured Communities for you: tick the ones you want. Once you change a tick yourself, VoxUno leaves your ticks alone.
If VoxUno can't make its Suggestions, the step offers the Featured Communities, unticked, and the box, with Try again to look again.
When you paste an address:
- a Stack Exchange page adds that Stack Exchange site;
- any GitHub address adds GitHub Discussions;
- a Reddit, Hacker News or Bluesky address adds that site;
- any other site is matched to a Community VoxUno already knows, or waits in Pending review. You can follow it straight away, and its Results start if our team approves it.
Addresses that don't load are refused. Communities has more on following, adding and each Community's status.
When you're happy with your Communities, press Continue to move on to Monitors. You need to follow at least one Community first. You can come back to this step until you finish Setup, and if you change your Business Profile, VoxUno looks for Communities again.
4. Pick starter Monitors
A Monitor looks for one Match term, a word or phrase, in your Followed Communities. This step suggests terms from your Business Profile: your brand, each competitor, phrases buyers use when they're looking for a product like yours, the problems you solve and your products. The step shows nothing else until they arrive. Each comes with the reason it was suggested and its suggested Tags:
| Suggested term | Its Tags |
|---|---|
| Your brand | Brand |
| A competitor | Competitor |
| A buyer's phrase, or a problem you solve | Lead |
| One of your products | None |
Each term's Tags show as chips beside its Tags button: change them there before or after you tick it. Type your own terms into the box to add more. A counter shows how many Monitors you have, out of your Plan's limit.
When the suggested terms arrive, VoxUno ticks them in the order offered, up to your Plan's limit (during the trial, the Business Plan's), each with its suggested Tags. Once you change a tick yourself, VoxUno leaves your ticks alone. This is the last step: press Start monitoring to finish Setup.
A Match term matches whole words, exactly as written, in a post's title or body, ignoring capitals. "alternative to jira" matches "Alternative to Jira", but not "alternatives to Jira". A Monitor's Match term can't be changed later: to look for something different, you create a new Monitor. Monitors covers writing them.
The preview
Under the four steps, a preview shows what your Monitors found this week, newest first. It changes as you change your Communities and Monitors.
The preview leaves out Indie Hackers, and the forums VoxUno reads by their newest posts rather than by searching them, so your Monitors may find more than it shows.
Finish Setup
When you finish Setup:
- VoxUno starts collecting. Each new Monitor first looks back through the Communities VoxUno can search, for earlier posts that match. From then on, VoxUno checks every Community daily, around the clock.
- Setup is gone for good. You can't reopen it or run it again: from now on, you change your Communities and Monitors on their own pages, and your Business Profile in Configuration.
- You land on your Dashboard. It charts your Results and how your Monitors and Followed Communities are doing. Your Project's pages are now Dashboard, Communities, Monitors, Results and Configuration.
Each day there's something new, the Digest emails it to every member of your Project: at 08:00 in your time zone, unless an Owner changes it.
What's next
- Work through your Results, and follow one's link to join the conversation yourself: VoxUno never posts for you. See Results and the Dashboard.
- Sort Results with Tags.
- Invite your team: Members and roles.
